Raw milk cheeses

Monte Azul Artisanal Cheese Company is located in a spectacular mountain setting in the foothills of Cerro Chirripó, Costa Rica’s highest peak.

 

Formerly operated as an award winning boutique hotel (Condé Nast Traveller, featured in Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure and more), the gorgeous 100-acre property along the Chirripó Pacífico River, is home to an operating cheese company dedicated to producing gourmet quality raw milk cheeses, mostly from goat milk.

Recommended by Travel & Leisure, the Chef at the Four Seasons Papagayo, and by the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, among others, the cheeses are made from raw goat milk or cow milk sourced exclusively from one single farm.

DAY 01

Arrival

The Monte Azul Artisanal Cheese Company is set in a most unexpected rainforest setting, where you will get an insider’s view into the operations of a working artisanal cheese company. This opportunity is hosted directly by the owner-operators and is designed for those who are passionate for artisanal quality cheese.

 

Your experience begins with a welcome to your private Casita and garden, where your dinners will be delivered by a local gastropub. Take some time to relax or walk our meandering trail to a gorgeous waterfall for bird watching or just to enjoy the sights and sounds of the rainforest in our year-round spring-like weather.

DAY 02

Your Big Cheesey Day!

enjoy a breakfast of local products including our own Greek style yogurt, locally produced organic coffee and freshly baked bread. After breakfast you will be escorted to a local family dairy farm and take part in milking a cow, making cheese and learning about the family’s self sufficient and sustainable practices.

 

Lunch will be served for you just steps away at locally owned Batsú Gastropub.

 

After relaxing back at Monte Azul, you will receive a guided cheese tasting of the many varieties of cheeses produced here, directly with the Founder Cheesemakers.

You will be served a platter of a selection of fine cheeses and a bottle of premium wine.

Beginning with the mildest flavors, you will experience each cheese in a crecendo of falvors and intensities. The Cheesemakers will guide you through each sample with a presentation of characteristics, technique and each cheese's unique story.

 

Dinner will be delivered to your Casita for your second night at Monte Azul.
